About SLIP
I’ve had a love for clay and creating with my hands for many years. It’s an element without limits. I could be using clay on the wheel or hand building, making slab work, or creating tiles and wall pieces, it’s a process I enjoy immensely. Through producing and creating new work, I feel i’m searching for a breakthrough moment of clarity, the birth of a new direction or idea.
I love combining clay with found materials and natural textures to make shapes on and off the wheel, one off pieces and functional ware, adapting my ideas from found in the natural environment. I use clay and recycled slip to create a unique blend of handmade pieces and practical ware for anyone’s home.
The process of creating with my hands allows for a free, spontaneous and unpredictable outcome to each work. I love the random nature of a pit firing, incorporating saw dust, animal bone, seaweed and ochre into my work, its an organic and textural way of working.
Central to Slip philosophy is to reuse and recycle resources: everything is used up the grog, trim and scraps go into a bucket and are used to make wall hangings, tiles or clay backgrounds to photograph the work. Its part of the cycle.
I’m a commercial photographer by trade working for clients and shooting to briefs dictated by budget and brand with a definitive outcome. In contrast clay allows me to work with no limits or deadlines it gives me a freedom to explore and create, to travel an unfamiliar road.
My work has been featured in most major Australian and International food magazines and books.
